At this price, this lens is a bargain. Less than 300 pounds for such an sharp lens is an offer every sony owner should consider. It goes down to 1.8, and is usable all the way. The glass is of high quality, maintaining a high contrast, beautiful colours and sharpness all over the field. I took this lens to, among other places, London, and felt that the range on my A500 is useful for city shots, not wide enough for close ups on buildings, but perfect for squirrels, birds and other animals running around, very good for portraits and the instant action shots you see while walking around in a vibrant city. The good low light capabilities makes it perfect for the evening as well. I previously owned the Sal 16-105, and the upgrade in IQ is immense, it efficiently made me keep the lens on for my whole holiday in London despite loosing both the wide range and the zoom that the 16-105 offer.

The negative is that the exterior build is plastic rather than metal, but that also decrease the weight, so it doesn’t feel heavy on your shoulder for a full day of shooting. One important negative side other thing is that it misses the focus now and then, more than my 16-105 did. Not a problem for portaits and city shots, but rather for the instant wildlife shots.

Absolutely recommended, but be aware of some focus missing shots now and then.
