Good quality camera for the price, 9 Aug 2011

I have a Canon digital SLR camera, but bought this Canon PowerShot A3300 as a small "tuck it in your handbag" camera. For that it is perfect. It takes good quality shots and is extremely easy to use with some nice features - face tracking etc. In full sun, the screen is difficult to see and unlike using the SLR I am never entirely sure whether I have taken a good shot or not until I look at it in detail afterwards! However, so far so good and this has been a good purchase - particularly when on holiday in the evenings when you don't want to be carrying a large camera around with you. Good price too. Would recommend.

I consider myself a very experienced and competent semi-professional photographer and currently own and use both film and digital equipment, including a high-spec Canon 50D dslr outfit and complete medium format outfit, both of which are extremely bulky and heavy. However, I also carry and use a tiny Canon Ixus 500 pocket digicam which, despite its 5.1 megapixel sensor, can still deliver exceptionally good A4-size prints when required. I bought the new Powershot A3300IS to ultimately replace my 6-year-old Ixus 500, principally because it has a really advanced modern specification with a screen that is four times larger. Having put the A3300IS through its paces, I can confidently assert that it is a remarkable piece of kit and can readily produce excellent A4-size prints with ease.

It has a solid, all-metal body, which appears both handsome and durable. My sole gripe is with Canon's meanness by not supplying even a basic SDHC card, so don't forget to order one from Amazon with the camera, so that you can get shooting straight away.

This camera is an excellent little camera. It is compact and comes with a camera strap for extra security. The camera has lots of different modes, including a hd video mode, fish eye mode, and scene mode which allows you to select scenes like beach, snow, fireworks, kids&pets, landscapes etc. The camera has a great quality zoom and the clarity and detail of the pictures are amazing. The screen is also very clear, it is a great size which allows you to use the camera easily. Overall the camera is great. The only drawback is that the flap/cover for the battery and sd card compartment is not vey strong, and needs to be used carefully.

After years using a Fujifilm S7000 crossover/bridge camera I decided that it was time for an upgrade. I watched a review of the older version of this camera on The Gadget Show and was very impressed with how it stood up to the likes of Panasonic and Fujifilm. When the DSC-HX100V came out I went and got one as soon as possible.

At first the menu system takes some getting used to and one accessory that I would advise everyone to get is a screen protector, as the screen stands proud of the body of the camera and is the first thing to receive an impact at the back.

That said, I took it out with a 16GB card (minimum size I would recommend is 8GB) and used it for a full day along some of the English south coast. Using the dial on the top of the camera to switch between modes can sometimes be a little slow when you're in a hurry to catch that one-off picture. The modes offered coped well with everything that I threw at it though, and I was staggered by the lens which gave an incredible amount of zoom (30x optical) and allows you to get within centimetres of an object and still focus sharply. Burst shooting did what it suggests and I took several hundred images over the course of the day and recorded about half an hour of video in total. The panorama mode was impressive too and stitched the scenery together convincingly. The flash was also used intelligently by the superior auto mode and did things in camera that I would normally have to do in Photoshop to eliminate shadows behind objects. There are a million 16MP cameras out there but the compact cameras for half the price just cannot compete with the image quality that you get from something like this with a serious lens. I could have spent the same amount of money on a basic DSLR but why the hell would I, when I can do everything they can without the need to change lenses every five minutes and clean the sensor. The only DSLR that I've used that would actually beat this camera performance-wise is a Canon 5DMKII but when you look at the cost of one of those BEFORE you've even bought a lens there is no contest.

Video quality was so impressive, that I have decided not to purchase a separate video camera. Sound quality was also excellent with the stereo microphones mounted on top of the camera, although the wind noise reduction didn't help one bit on a blustery coastline. The only thing I would warn you about with regard to video, is that you need a decent computer to play back the files as they are HUGE! The zoom was smooth while filming and the autofocus gets there even in very low light conditions. There is almost zero motion blur and the compression copes very well with lots of movement so it's great when filming fast moving water, people or animals. I was also very impressed with the image stabilisation which was particularly helpful when filming on full zoom without a tripod.

The battery life was mind boggling and it just kept on going all day and still had about 40% left when I got home. If you're looking for an amazing camera for photos that shoots fantastic video as in important feature rather than a minor party piece, then look no further.

I am extremely happy with this SZ-10. It is such an easy camera to use. Without refering to the manual I've found so many interesting features. Imagine when I do the unmanly thing and dare to refer to the manual. The zoom is very good for such a small package with excellent stability. The super macro is very impressive. I've also enjoyed the high-speed function which I've put to good use in capturing birds in an in-flight fight at a feeder. Brilliant action shots. I entered some of the macro photos in a competition (no I'm not a pro) and these got some very good reviews. I like the feel of the camera with a good anti-slip grip. If I have a negative then it's just that the USB connection is not very secure so do not move the camera about once connected. Otherwise it's fine. Also when using the super-macro function the auto focus tends to focus on other than what you want. But just a few retries and it'll re-focus. This is dependant on what you're shooting at and especially if the background is more prelevant to the foreground. Understandable. But it is a super buy and really recommend it. I recently bought my wife another make of camera (a top brand) for £20 cheaper and it is nowhere near as good as this Olympus SZ-10

As with some others reviewing this product, I own a DLSR as a "main camera" and bought this to carry around every day when I don't want all the kit and caboodle of a full set up.

I've been very impressed with it. It offers a good level of flexibility with plenty of shooting modes, or you can set it to a "fully automatic" setting where it will do all the work for you... just press the button. Talking points are : the "panoramic" photo feature, where the camera will "magically" join three landscape shots together to form a panoramic shot, and the Face Recognition system (that's "recognition" not just face detection) where the camera will pick out the faces of your loved ones from the crowd and help you organise you exposures accordingly... well that's the claim!

Results have been more than satisfactory for a compact in this price range... I would go as far as to say that they are excellent in most conditions. The 10x zoom is a nice feature for this money, and build quality seems robust. Pictures can appear a little grainy in low light conditions - but hey, we're talking about a sub £[] compact here, and if you read the reviews of many premium compacts (e.g. Panasonic Lumix TZ20 - which is considered a good camera at nearly twice the price) the criticism is just the same (as indeed is much of the functionality).

I don't really have any gripes... perhaps the positioning of the mode dial means that it is easily knocked out of place when removing the camera from a case, but that's about it really.

All in all a "little cracker" for the money in my book. I can also recommend the relevant Fuji leather case which is not supplied with the camera sadly, but worth the small extra investment to keep things looking shiny.

I bought this camera for my summer hols to Greece and it has turned out to be an excellent little camera. The quality of the pictures are of a great quality and coupled with 10x zoom you can capture some great photos that you'd normally expect from a higher range or more expensive camera. There are numerous modes for the camera and all work extremely well and in particular the panoramic mode. It allows you to capture some terrific landscape shots by taking 3 shots and joining them to make one. But be careful as you need a steady hand when panning the camera across your view as occasionally the picture can be a little dis-jointed.

The plug in charger is a bonus as it means less cables and ideal for when abroad.

I'm giving this camera a well deserved 5 stars because it's a high quality camera with many functions and at under £150 there's not much else out there that can rival it at that price.

So if you're on a budget and want a good camera for all round use this one is a must.
